The excursion possibilities are almost endless, but Trier is definitely worth a visit. This is Germany's oldest city with a beautiful historic center. It is ideal for shopping and admiring old buildings and the Porta Negra. Just south of the Moselle is the Hunsruck Nature Reserve. Be sure to head for Idar Oberstein, famous for its gemstone grinding. To the north lies the Volcanic Eifel, where the more rugged nature and volcanic lakes can be admired. In short, there is plenty to see in this beautiful region.
